A British glass artist made these beads by melting glass and quickly wrapping it around an inner core until the desired shape was reached. This type of glass is called lampwork; beads are made one by one and no two are exactly alike. Artisans have been making lampwork beads since the Roman Empire. Why "lampwork"? Because for centuries, oil lamps were used to melt the glass. Today's artisans use torches, but the term lampwork persists.Â
